One man...three techniques...master of none.

Well, Kids, how many of you are tired of me starting these posts with "well, kids?" I guess I should try something new once in a while. Something like...I don't know...3 images at once. Before President Elect Barack Obama (Captain Awesome) was elected I had to do an illustration for a story that compared his health care plan with that of John McCain (Captain not Awesome). I decided cut paper was the way to go because honestly, nothing makes me feel more artistic than deadlines, panick, and using scissors. You can see the page here. Next was an illustration about the dangers of everyday things like mercury in fish, crazy chemicals in our aluminum beverage cans, cell phones maybe causing brain tumors, and some crazy chemical in plastic bottles. Last, but not least...maybe...is this piece for a story about Memphians voting on charter ammendments. They had the idea of a voter making his/her decision at the box. I'm all "ammendment illustration"-ed out these days so I welcomed someone else cutting out the brianstorming process just this once. While I don't love the illustration I do think the texture is interesting.

I salute you for experimenting with different techniques, it's a scary thing and not easy to step outside a comfort zone. The cool thing I think is that when you do that you can find new tricks to apply to your "regular" style.

I think I like the second one best, mainly because the dude looks like he's being irradiated and COULD go all "HULK SMASH!" in a minute. That and I really like the structure of his face.

I get a TRON light-cycle vibe from the third one.

While contemplating leaving a useful comment, I decided instead to note that I greatly enjoy the attention paid to making McCain have his little nubby fingers, and Obama his long ones. Lovely.

I <3 the cut paper. I wish I still had good ideas like that.

Thanks Shobo,

I did learn a few things and I'd actually like to keep trying the cut paper illustrations.

I heard you're not going to make it for Christmas. This makes me sad, dude. I need your address so I can send you a Christmas card.

Also...Funlola introduced me and Ashley to your mom. Super nice lady! I wish we had more time to have spent getting to know her. Maybe some other vist.

Kayla,
Thanks for noticing the fingers. I took particular pride in the attention I paid to the difference in their fingers. Obama's got some long fingers. I think that means he's more awesome than say...a candidate with short stubby fingers...but that's just me.

Evan,
Good to hear from you, man! It's been too long. Too long. I still want to buy a shirt from you. I think I left a comment on your blog a long time ago about which one I wanted, but I can't remember now. I'll have to go back and look. Stop focusing on all the work you haven't created and start focussing on the work you still have time to create! Do it, grasshopper!

Shane,

Believe me I'm bummed I won't be able to make it over for Christmas as well. I'll definitely send my address in an email real soon and let you know what I'm up to.
